History
Our club was formed in 1993 under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Box Hill with the objective of providing a means for people in the Mont Albert area to meet regularly for social and educational purposes.
The Rotary Club invited local residents to a meeting held at the Hotham Street Uniting Church in Mont Albert to consider starting a Probus Club. The idea was keenly supported and various people indicated that they were prepared to join a committee to run such a club. This group met again and established the first committee of the club.
A second general meeting at Hotham Street accepted this self-appointed committee and made the decision that we would be a combined club, inclusive of both men and women members. By June 1993 there were 99 applications for membership, showing the popularity of forming such a club. The next major challenge was finding a suitable venue for our monthly meetings. We looked at various places and finally agreed to the Box Hill RSL, where our first meeting took place on Friday July 9th, 1993. At the first meeting a talk was presented on the history of Box Hill by a local historian, and two members presented an outline of their personal histories and interests, an activity which continues today.
Since the club was formed, members have initiated a large number of activities. The diverse range of activities has grown over the years and continues to evolve, reflecting the energy of our members. Details of some of the activities can be found on the “Activities” page.
Membership
The membership of the Club is limited to 120 as this is the maximum number of people that can be accommodated at our monthly meeting place. The Club endeavours to achieve an equal representation of male and female members.
We welcome applications to join our Club. Membership is primarily open to residents of Mont Albert and vicinity, or to people who have a strong connection with this area. Sometimes we may have a waiting list because of the popularity of our club. All new membership enquiries should be directed to the Membership Convenor (see “Contact Us” page).
At this point in the Covid – 19 pandemic, all prospective members along with current members, must provide evidence of having had 4 anti Covid – 19 vaccinations and any more that become available and recommended.
A small joining fee is payable by a member on admission to the club, and the annual subscription payable by members is due on the 1st April each year.
Each year at the Annual General Meeting, committee members & event convenors are elected to organize activities and perform functions to enable the smooth running of the club. We welcome enthusiasm and commitment from people who seek to be actively involved in our club.

Meetings
Generally the club meets on the second Friday of each month. Up until March 2023 the Club used to meet in the Upton Room at the Box Hill RSL in Station Street Box Hill. Due to renovation works being undertaken at the Box Hill RSL, from March 2023 the Club now meets in The Function Room at the Box Hill Golf Club in Station Street Box Hill. The meetings start at 10.00 am and comprise brief reports on upcoming events followed by a break for morning tea. After the break we have a guest speaker who delivers a presentation on their field of interest. The topics are always interesting and can vary from travel, history, media, health etc.
The meetings finish at 12 noon and members often dine at the bistro on the premises.
Visitors to our Meetings
Our meetings are always open to a limited number of visitors interested in seeing how our club works, and potentially becoming members. If you are interested in attending one of our meetings, please contact the Club Secretary by email or post. Refer to the “Contact Us” page for details.
